Garden-Route Safari

Day 1: Cape Town - Oudtshoorn

Our destination today is Oudtshoorn. Oudtshoorn is situated in the semi-desert area known as the 'Klein (little) Karoo'. We'll take the well-travelled R 62 from Cape Town; pass Worcester, Robertson, Montagu, Barrydale, Ladiesmith and Calitzdorp to finally get to Oudtshoorn. We have planned a wine tasting in Robertson and could have a lovely picnic lunch on the bank of the Breede River.

Day 2: Oudtshoorn - Knysna

After breakfast you'll be engaged in a guided tour through the magnificent Cango Caves. The network of caves is the largest one in Africa and contains an impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors to the caves get to explore a section of the place on foot, accompanied by a guide. Next we'll visit an ostrich farm. The tour guide will inform you of worthwhile facts about the large, flightless birds. Still to be enjoyed on the ostrich farm is a hearty lunch, where of course ostrich meat features on the menu. After this we'll take the Outeniqua Pass, through George to Knysna.

Day 3: Knysna

Today starts off with a boat ride over the lagoon. By ferry, you will be transported to Featherbed Nature Reserve, a private nature park area on the west 'Head' of Knysna. The excursion includes the Ferry ride, a tractor ride at the summit of the West Head and a 2km walk, with a tour guide, through the forest and along the spectacular coastline. Upon our return, a first class buffet table awaits under the shade of the Milkwood trees. After lunch we head back to Knysna. Now the afternoon is yours. You may want to relax at the poolside and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere or go for a leisurely stroll at Knysna's Waterfront.

Day 4: Knysna – Kenton on Sea – Safari Camp

Today we'll have an early morning start and head past Port Elizabeth to Kenton-on-Sea and the nearby game reserve. En route to the game reserve, we'll take a walk to the "Big Tree". From there we'll go on an approx. two and a half hour drive to the game reserve close to Kenton-on-Sea. We'll ride to our accommodation via a scenic boat ride. Late afternoon you will attend the 1st game drive, followed by dinner.

Day 5: Safari Camp

The entire Day has been set aside for the game reserve. At the crack of dawn we set off in a 4 wheel drive vehicle to go on a game drive. The afternoon is yours to spend as you wish. Then, around early evening the third safari begins! Enjoy exploring the untouched natural environment.

Day 6: Kenton on Sea – Tsitsikamma

After the last game drive and a hearty breakfast we will head for Port Elizabeth where we have a city orientation tour. On our way back to the Garden-Route we'll visit the Tsitsikamma National Park. A short walk from here leads us to Storms River Mouth.

Day 7: Tsitsikamma -Villiersdorp

On the way to Villiersdorp, we'll stop at the Bloukrans Bridge and hopefully see a bungee jumper plummeting from the highest bridge into a 216m depth! In Mossel Bay we'll visit the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex which shows a life-size replica of the Dias-Caravel as well as the famous 500-year old Post Office Tree. From here we'll continue on to Swellendam, the third oldest city in South Africa. In Swellendam we'll visit the Drostdy Museum which used to be the seat of the landdrost, a magistrate-cum-commissioner of the Dutch East India Company.

Day 8: Villiersdorp – Cape Agulhas –Hermanus

The last day of our tour takes us to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. Geographically, Cape Agulhas is situated about 170km East from Cape Town and 53km further South from Cape Point. From here, we'll venture on to Hermanus. During the months of June through to December, the Southern Right whales congregate in the bay to mate and bring their young into the world. They can be spotted while on a boat ride or a leisurely stroll along the coastal road. We head back to Cape Town via Clarens Drive, a scenic coastal road, which offers a lovely view of False Bay.
